What is branding
Also known as: brand management, brand building
Branding is managing everything that shapes how people perceive a brand: name, visual identity, tone of voice, promise and, above all, the buyer's experience. A brand, in the classic definition, is a name, term, design, symbol or other feature that distinguishes one seller's products from those of others. Branding is the work of making that difference worth something.
Two roasters in the same city sell coffee of similar quality. The first changes packaging every batch, writes one way on Instagram and another on its site, and each staff member describes the coffee differently.
The second has an easy name, the same identity everywhere, a clear promise (fresh coffee, roasted this week) and keeps that promise with every delivery. It charges more per bag and is the one customers recommend. The coffee is similar; the brand is not.
A brand is not a logo
The logo is the most visible and least decisive part. A beautiful brand that delivers late loses to a simple brand that keeps its promise.
| What it is | |
|---|---|
| Promise | What the brand guarantees to buyers |
| Positioning | The place it wants to hold relative to competitors |
| Visual identity | Logo, colors, typography, photos and icons |
| Verbal identity | Tone of voice, vocabulary and way of explaining |
| Experience | Product, service, delivery and after sales, where the promise is kept or broken |
The value of a brand
Brands exist for recognition and, above all, to create and store value, known as brand equity. In practice, a strong brand lets a company charge a bit more for the same product, win customers with less effort because they arrive trusting it, and keep the ones who bought.
That value builds slowly and is lost fast: one bad experience, retold by many people, undoes years of communication.
How to build it
- Research: what customers value, what competitors say, where there is room.
- Define positioning and promise before designing anything.
- Create a name and visual and verbal identities consistent with that promise.
- Record everything in a brand guide, so anyone can apply it the same way.
- Apply it consistently at every touchpoint, from ads to customer service.
- Take care of the experience, which is where the brand is confirmed.
Branding and performance
Brand and sales are often treated as rival budgets: one to be seen, another to convert. In practice, each feeds the other. People who already know and trust a brand decide faster when they see its ad, and every well delivered sale strengthens the brand.
The risk lies at the extremes: performance only, with no brand, becomes a price war; brand only, without measuring sales, becomes spending with no visible return.
How to measure it
- Unaided and aided awareness, through audience surveys.
- Searches for the brand name on Google, tracked in Search Console.
- Direct traffic and customers who arrive through referrals.
- NPS and public reviews.
- The ability to charge above the market average without losing customers.
Frequently asked questions
What is branding?
Managing everything that shapes how a brand is perceived: name, identity, promise, tone of voice and, above all, the buyer's experience.
What is the difference between a brand and branding?
A brand is what distinguishes one company's products from others. Branding is the ongoing work of building and managing that brand.
Is branding just visual identity?
No. Visual identity is one part. Promise, positioning, tone of voice and experience weigh just as much, and experience usually weighs more.
Do small businesses need branding?
Yes, in the right measure. A clear promise, consistent identity and an experience that keeps the promise already make a difference, without big projects.
How do I measure branding results?
Through awareness surveys, brand name searches, direct traffic, referrals, NPS and the ability to charge more without losing customers.
