What is content marketing
Also known as: content strategy
Content marketing is a strategic approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience and, ultimately, drive profitable customer action. The definition comes from the Content Marketing Institute. Instead of talking about the product all the time, the company helps its audience solve problems, and earns trust and demand in return.
An industrial packaging manufacturer publishes technical guides: how to choose export packaging, how much weight each material holds, what changes with humidity. Each guide answers a question the sales team heard every week.
The guides start bringing in buyers through search, and sales uses the same pieces in negotiations. Conversations start a step ahead, because customers already know the basics.
Content is not just a blog
| What it is for | |
|---|---|
| Articles and guides | Getting found in search and explaining in depth |
| Videos | Demonstrating the product and teaching hands on |
| Email and newsletters | Keeping the relationship with existing contacts |
| Case studies | Proving results with a real customer |
| Ebooks, checklists and spreadsheets | Trading valuable content for a contact |
| Tools and calculators | Solving a problem on the spot and being remembered for it |
How to make it pay off
- Define who it is for: a specific audience, not everyone.
- Pick topics from real questions, coming from sales, support and search.
- Give every piece a goal: attract, convert, support the sale or retain.
- Bring what only your company knows: numbers, cases, the experience of people who do the work.
- Plan distribution together with production; content nobody sees does not exist.
- Review what ages, and remove or update what became wrong.
What Google calls helpful content
Google advises creating content made primarily for people, not to manipulate rankings. Among the self assessment questions it proposes: does the content provide original information, reporting, research or analysis? Does it provide a substantial, complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
On the other side, the spam policies describe scaled content abuse: many pages generated primarily to manipulate search and not to help readers, no matter how they were produced.
Content made with AI
Google does not prohibit AI. It asks companies to consider the how and the why: if automation generated a substantial part of the content, make that clear when readers would reasonably expect it, explain how it was used and why it was useful.
The risk is not the tool but the result: hundreds of generic pages, with no experience and no review, are exactly what the policies describe as scaled content abuse.
How to measure it
- Qualified traffic from the topics that matter for sales.
- Contacts generated by content and each piece's conversion rate.
- Content's share in sales, through attribution reports.
- Real engagement: reading time, scroll depth, returning readers.
- Use by sales: how often the team sends that piece to a customer.
Frequently asked questions
What is content marketing?
Creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a defined audience and, ultimately, drive profitable customer action.
What is the difference between content marketing and inbound marketing?
Inbound is the strategy of attracting customers instead of interrupting them. Content marketing is the main fuel of that strategy, but it also serves others, such as supporting active prospecting.
What are the formats of content marketing?
Articles, guides, videos, email, case studies, ebooks, checklists, spreadsheets, tools and podcasts. The best format depends on where the audience is and on the goal.
Can I use AI to produce content?
Yes. Google does not prohibit it, but it judges usefulness. Generic mass content made to manipulate search is treated as spam, whatever the tool.
How do I measure content marketing results?
By qualified traffic, by the contacts and sales content generates or helps generate, and by how much the sales team uses it.
