Short answer

Lead nurturing is a planned relationship with contacts who are not yet ready to buy: a sequence of messages, content and offers sent over time, according to each lead's interest and stage. The goal is to keep the company top of mind, address questions and objections, and alert sales when a lead shows buying signals.

Hypothetical example

A graduate school gets contacts from people who download its guide on choosing a specialization. Before, those contacts went into a spreadsheet and got a call the same day, when most did not even know whether they would study that year.

With a flow of five emails over three weeks, featuring alumni stories, scholarship questions and the enrollment calendar, a contact only goes to an advisor after clicking on scholarships or asking to talk. Calls now go to people who are already deciding.

Why nurture

Most people who leave their contact details are not ready to buy that day. Without nurturing, two bad paths remain: the lead is forgotten, or sales calls too early and burns the conversation.

Nurturing fills that gap. It educates, handles objections sales would hear later and shows who is warming up, based on what people open, click and reply to.

How to build a flow

Example flow

If the lead clicks the day 7 case, it can jump straight to the invitation. A good flow reacts to behavior instead of blindly following the calendar.

A three week flow
Message
Day 0Resource delivery and welcome
Day 3Content that goes deeper into the problem
Day 7A case from a customer similar to the lead
Day 12Answers to the most common objections
Day 18Invitation to a call or demo

Channels beyond email

Email is the most used channel, thanks to the low cost of sending several messages over time, but the same logic works for messaging apps, SMS and even direct mail. Ads shown to past website visitors are part of nurturing too, keeping the brand present while the lead researches.

On any channel, the same rule applies: people need to know why they are receiving it and be able to leave easily.

What to measure

Frequently asked questions

What is lead nurturing?

A planned relationship with contacts who are not yet ready to buy, through a sequence of messages and content sent over time.

What is the difference between lead nurturing and email marketing?

Email marketing is the channel. Nurturing is the staged relationship strategy, which usually uses email but also messaging, SMS and ads.

How many emails should a nurture flow have?

There is no right number. Flows of four to six messages over a few weeks are a good start, adjusted to the buying cycle and to recipients' behavior.

When should a nurtured lead go to sales?

When it shows buying signals, such as asking for contact, visiting the pricing page or passing the lead scoring threshold.

Do I need a tool to nurture leads?

With few contacts, you can start manually. With volume, an automation tool or a CRM with automated flows keeps anyone from being forgotten.
