What is a lead in marketing
Also known as: qualified lead, prospect, lead generation
A lead, in marketing, is a person or company that showed interest in what you sell and left a way to be contacted, such as a name and phone number in a form or a chat message. It is a potential customer, not a customer: between the lead and the sale there is still qualification, conversation and a decision.
A coding school publishes a free guide to careers in tech. To download it, people enter their name, email and what they plan to study. In one month, 800 people download it: that is 800 leads.
Of those, 120 say they want to start within three months and have the age and availability the course requires. Those 120 are qualified leads, and they are the ones the sales team calls first.
Where the word comes from
In this sense, a lead is a clue: a hint of a possible sale. The work of attracting these contacts is called lead generation.
Types of lead
| What it means | |
|---|---|
| Lead | Left contact details, with no filter |
| Qualified lead | Fits the profile of customer the company serves |
| MQL | Marketing considers it ready for a sales approach |
| SQL | Sales accepted it and will work the opportunity |
How to generate leads
- Ads with a form or a message, on Google and social media, leading to a page with a clear offer.
- Useful content, such as articles, guides and calculators, that attracts people researching the topic.
- Lead magnets, free materials offered in exchange for contact details.
- Events and webinars, with registration.
- Customer referrals, which usually bring the most qualified leads of all.
A lead is not a customer: what to do after capture
The most expensive mistake in lead generation is treating every contact as ready to buy. Someone who downloaded a guide out of curiosity does not want a sales call the next day, and someone who asked for a quote does not want to wait three days for an answer.
The right path sorts leads by moment. Those who are ready get a fast response from sales. Those still researching get content that helps them decide, called lead nurturing, until they show signs they are ready.
What to measure
- CPL: what each lead costs.
- Qualification rate: how many fit the customer profile.
- First response time: how long the company takes to reply.
- Lead-to-sale rate: how many become customers.
- Source: which campaign, ad or page each lead came from, to know where to invest more.
